Rooted in Power: Calling on Our Ancestors for Strength and Grounding

Writer: Rajpreet BrarRajpreet Brar

In a world that moves fast, it’s easy to feel unmoored, adrift in the chaos of the present, disconnected from the wisdom of the past. But we are never truly alone. Beneath our feet, in the marrow of our bones, in the stories woven into our very being, our ancestors remain.

They are not gone. They walk with us. They are the foundation beneath our steps, the unseen hands on our back, the voices in the wind urging us forward. When we feel lost, ungrounded, or unsure of our path, we can turn to them for guidance, strength, and remembrance of who we are.

Why Call Upon Our Ancestors?

To call upon our ancestors is to reclaim our roots, our belonging, and our unshakable connection to something greater than ourselves. Across cultures and traditions, people have long honored those who came before them, not out of obligation, but out of the understanding that the past is never truly past.

  • They ground us in belonging: We are not just individuals; we are part of a lineage, a story still unfolding.

  •  They remind us of our strength: Their resilience, wisdom, and survival live within us.

  •  They offer protection and guidance: Their presence can clear obstacles and reveal our path.

  • They help us heal generational wounds: Through connection, we release inherited patterns and reclaim our power.

In times of transition, grief, or uncertainty, calling upon our ancestors is an act of remembering. Not just who they were, but who we are because of them.

How to Call on Your Ancestors for Grounding

1. Speak Their Names & Invite Their Presence

Names are power. When we speak the names of those who came before us, we awaken their presence in our lives. If you do not know their names, simply call upon your ancestors of blood, spirit, and wisdom.

Invocation:

Ancestors who walk with me, known and unknown, I call upon you. Stand beside me, guide me, root me in my truth. I honor you.

2. Create a Sacred Connection Space

Designate a small altar or sacred space in your home a place to commune with your lineage. This can be as simple as a candle, a bowl of water, or meaningful objects passed down through generations. Offering flowers, incense, or food in their honor strengthens the energetic connection.

3. Listen for Their Guidance

Ancestors speak in subtle ways, through dreams, synchronicities, sudden insights, and the quiet knowing that settles in your bones. Pay attention to recurring symbols, whispers in meditation, or feelings of warmth and presence when you reach out. Their wisdom is always near.

4. Offer Gratitude & Honor Their Journey

Acknowledging and honoring our ancestors strengthens our connection and heals our lineage. Simple acts of remembrance, pouring a libation, lighting a candle, preparing a meal in their honor, affirm that their legacy lives on through us.

5. Connect with the Land

Our ancestors lived in harmony with the Earth; their energy lingers in the soil, the rivers, the mountains. Walking barefoot, sitting beneath a tree, or simply breathing deeply in nature grounds us in their presence. If possible, visit the lands of your ancestors, or hold a stone or soil from those places as a tangible link to their energy.

When to Call Upon Your Ancestors

  •  When feeling ungrounded, lost, or uncertain

  •  When seeking guidance, protection, or clarity

  •  When experiencing grief, transformation, or a major life shift

  •  When honoring a personal, cultural, or spiritual tradition

  •  When stepping into your power and purpose

You Are the Living Prayer of Your Ancestors

Your ancestors do not exist only in the past, they exist within you. Their strength is in your bones, their dreams live in your heart, their resilience is the foundation upon which you stand.

In moments of doubt, stand tall. Place your hand over your heart. Feel their presence. Remember:

You are the answer to their prayers.

You are the embodiment of their resilience.

You walk with the strength of all who came before you.

May you always be rooted. May you always be guided. May you always be held
